Social Media and the Cultural Values

social media

The vast majority of the attendees of my webinars and Workshops on Culture related topics, believe and expect that at some point in the next 100 years, all of the cultures will be leveled down, unified, and there will be no more differences between various groups of humans, and all of these because of Social Media and the interconnectivity we all are experiencing around the globe.

Both the reliable theory on cultural differences and the practice, shows us that this will not happen in the near future for the following reasons:

  • Our Cultural Values transcend our consciousness and we will protect them with all of our strength, even without understanding them
  • There are already opposite cultural values that have created successful societies, and it is less likely that suddenly one of these societies will give up their values to try out the opposite.

  • Social Media works by giving humans the possibility to reinforce their own Values while dismissing the opposite ones, not because ignorance is more comfortable than curiosity, but because Social Media lacks that external point of view (the experienced practitioner on cultural differences) that will mediate the Values debate and will translate each side’s values to the other side in a comfortable non-threatening manner.
